Some things in life make no sense.
Like a random post on Twitter going viral. Some unknown becomes a YouTube celebrity overnight. Like something you put zero effort in becomes your best piece of work.
You try to understand it logically. Try to decipher the pattern. Then use that pattern again, but it doesn’t work.
And then you tell yourself… it must have been a coincidence. Or maybe I was just lucky.
But is it really a coincidence or something greater?
Let’s find out.
In chapter 50 of the book “Tao Te Ching”, there’s a line:
The master doesn’t think about his actions; they flow out from the core of his being.
This points to the concept of non-action. Or effortless action.
But you may argue, doesn’t every action takes effort?
I used to think like that, but not anymore.
Here’s why.
Have you ever had that feeling like something felt off, and then you dropped it, and it kinda saved your life.
Or the opposite, everything you understood about something logically pointed to no, but yet you went ahead and did it because it felt right in your heart. And it turned out to be the best decision of your life.
What is it?
What is this ‘thing’ inside us that guides us into making the right decision that make absolutely no logical sense.
Eastern philosophers called it ‘Tao’ or the way.
And once you learn how to align your actions with it, your whole life becomes as effortless as a dry leaf floating on a river.
But the thing is it cannot be understood or explained, you can only BE it.
So, I’ll try to point you to it with a few examples to put it into context.
- When we were little, we all loved playing some kind of game. Did you put in any effort to play it? Did you ever get tired of playing it? It felt effortless.
- When you are really thirsty, does pouring a glass of water feels like an effort?
- When you’re binge watching your favorite series on Netflix at 2 am and there are still 2 episodes to go, do you think twice if you should continue?
There’s an old saying:
“The shoe hurts only when it doesn’t fit”.
If it’s comfortable and fits right, you don’t even feel you’re wearing them.
All of the above examples capture the essence of non-action.
The action that doesn’t feel like action. The action that flows out of you without any force. Without any thinking. Without reason. Without logic.
You cannot understand it or explain it, it just is.
That, my friend, is core of effortless action.
The action that flows out from the core of your being.
Like someone you love. No matter how they look, or what they do, your love for them just pours out of you. It’s unconditional. It’s pure.
The same goes for the things that are aligned with your true nature.
It’s like brushing your teeth in the morning. You don’t think about it, you just do it.
Like for me, walking is effortless. I don’t have to motivate myself going for a walk. Once I’ve had my dinner, my legs just take me out for a walk.
Or writing this letter. You may be surprised, but I put in zero thinking into writing it. I rarely edit it. Or modify it to make it better. The truth is, I cannot make it better, I’ll only make it worse. It may sound counterintuitive. Because everything we’ve been taught about writing says the opposite. And we never question what we’ve been taught by the “experts”.
The words just pour out of me. I’m aware that my hands are writing, but I have no clue where are they coming from. It’s from a source beyond my understanding. The source of everything. Writers and artists call it the Ether. And to be honest, I am too small to question its intelligence.
So, I just follow it, feel it, and be it. Without any questions.
The viral post on Twitter, the Random song on YouTube with 100 million views, a book from an unknown writer selling millions of copies… it’s not just a mere coincidence.
It’s happens because while creating that piece of work, they unknowingly got plugged in to the source.
The source with infinite creativity.
I cannot tell you the how to connect with it. Wish I knew it.
But as a said before, you can only be it.
And the only advice I have is to rest your mind. Let the mud settle. And the way will find you.
If you need more clarity, my course ‘Awakening’ may help you get there.
Stay blessed,
Karun
Interesting read for me. Just want to add that the source we must connect to so as to undertake actions effortlessly is the author of creation
It must be similar to how architects design structures.. I can only draw in the design phase free hand sketches then develop them it takes time to flow . Though I do have to regularly go back to the drawing board .
I can’t write and certainly am not a speller or magician
